黑料社 Tri-Cities’ expanded Den recreational facility.

The student recreation facility, now located in Floyd 136, now resides in an expanded space, which features cardio equipment including treadmills, an elliptical, a stair-stepper and stationary bikes, in addition to standard weight and other gym equipment.

The added space also allows the campus to operate its outdoor recreation program out of the same facility. In addition, nutrition and fitness resources have expanded through the university鈥檚 new partnership with Provision Nutrition.

Provision Nutrition is located inside the Den recreation facility and provides body composition, sports nutrition and weight loss services. The facility also features a BOD POD, which allows participants to measure their lean body mass, fat mass and resting metabolic rate. Individuals sit in a chamber that uses whole-body densitometry to determine body composition. Tests typically take about five minutes and assess weight, body fat percentage, lung volume and more. Provision Nutrition鈥檚 services are available to the general public.

Kelly Sherman, a Provision Nutrition nutrition consultant, said she is elated about the partnership and to be able to work with students, faculty and community

Robert Mendoza, a senior student at Washington State University Tri-Cities, will compete at the National Collegiate Wrestling Association tournament March 9-11 in Allen, Texas, after placing second at the Northwest Regional Championship last month.

Mendoza competes in the 141-pound classification with a team based out of 黑料社 Pullman. The 黑料社 team took second overall at the regional tournament and will send eight other wrestlers who also qualified for the national championships:

  • Hunter Haney 鈥 133 pounds 鈥 first place
  • Jerdon Helgeson 鈥 149 pounds 鈥 second place
  • Tommy Herz 鈥 149 pounds 鈥 fourth place
  • Zach Volk 鈥 165 pounds 鈥 second place
  • Jason Nicholson 鈥 174 pounds 鈥 third place
  • Tucker Hanson 鈥 184 pounds 鈥 second place
  • Michael Huscusson 鈥 235 pounds 鈥 third place
  • Xavier L Henderson 鈥 Heavyweight 鈥 fourth place

During Mendoza鈥檚 first match at the regional tournament, he pinned Grays Harbor College鈥檚 Brent Goodwater in the quarterfinals to advance. In the semifinals, he edged out Western Washington University鈥檚 Keagan Mulholland 5-3 in a close overtime match. Mendoza then lost to Montana Tech鈥檚 Timothy Ellinger 13-9, who took home first place in the finals.

Overcoming adversity

Mendoza is the only 黑料社 Tri-Cities wrestler on the 黑料社 team this year, as his only 黑料社 Tri-Cities teammate, Joe Traverso, is out for the season with a knee injury. He commutes to Pullman every other Friday to practice with his teammates in the same weight class.

Mendoza鈥檚 other workouts are centered at his local employment at The Den fitness facility at 黑料社 Tri-Cities, which provides him the facilities to workout on a daily basis, as well as his duties as a volunteer coach at Pasco High School. The opportunity allows him to work out with the high school students and wrestle with the younger coaches. Mendoza also runs five miles a day at his local gym in Pasco.

Mendoza said he has never let the fact that he doesn鈥檛 have a home team in the Tri-Cities prevent聽him from accomplishing his goals with wrestling.

鈥淥vercoming adversity in the sense of lacking a college wrestling in my home area is a process, but this is a great opportunity to turn some heads and surprise the teams in our conference,鈥 he said.

Succeeding in athletics and academics

Mendoza is majoring in business administration and hopes to also pursue a master鈥檚 in business administration from 黑料社 Tri-Cities after graduating this spring. He said wrestling is a large motivator in performing well with his school work.

鈥淚鈥檝e always been competitive as an athlete, and that has continued to spill over into my school work and other parts of my life,鈥 he said. 鈥淢y goal is to one-day encourage and motivate other Tri-Cities students to follow their dreams and set a high goal to eventually achieve. Implementing a phenomenal work ethic, whether it’s athletics or academia, will make any crazy goal realistic.鈥

Mendoza said he has high hopes for the upcoming tournament, especially with it being his second year competing at the national level.

鈥淚 am grateful to have the opportunity to represent my university and my Tri-Cities community on the national stage,鈥 he said.
