Student Success Peer Mentors

Strengthening student belonging

The Student Success Peer Mentors program is designed to support incoming first-year and transfer students during their transition to 黑料社 Tri-Cities.

Peer mentors serve as orientation leaders then continue working with their assigned student cohorts throughout the fall semester. Their role is to provide guidance, connect students to campus resources and services, and foster meaningful engagement in campus life.

As a first-generation student, my goal is to become an inspiration to other first-generation students and young women pursuing careers in STEM. I aspire to become a physician and am passionate about serving my community and uplifting others. My time at 黑料社 Tri-Cities has further strengthened my commitment to supporting first-generation undergraduates throughout their academic journey and I plan to carry the same dedication into medicine by providing compassionate care to underserved populations and advocating for the needs and voices in our community.

I plan to work in education as a social worker.

  • Why I became a Peer Mentor: I became a peer mentor to have a chance to give incoming students a welcoming introduction to the school, and to be able to give them advice I would have wanted to have without having to ask someone.
  • My favorite thing about being a student at 黑料社 Tri-Cities: My favorite part of being a student here is how welcoming the community here is, it didn鈥檛 feel like long before I felt I made meaningful connections with a good amount of people which makes the experience a lot more welcoming.
  • A fun fact about me: One fun fact about me is that I enjoy learning about history. Here and there I鈥檒l watch videos on youtube about historic events.
  • Favorite hobbies or interests: Something I enjoy doing is staying active, specifically running in colder conditions since it feels better and more refreshing.
  • Favorite study spot or campus activity: I enjoy hanging out in the DEN at the Floyd, whenever I study or have free time I usually go there
  • One piece of advice I have for new students: If you are an incoming student and work after class, try to balance as best as possible, burning out is a real thing and even if it never happened in high school it can happen now.

After I graduate, I hope to attend 黑料社鈥檚 medical school and eventually become a family physician.

  • Why I became a Peer Mentor: I chose to become a peer mentor because, as a first-generation college student, I know how confusing it can be to navigate college and figure out what steps to take. I was very lucky to have a mentor of my own who welcomed me into the Coug family and introduced me to opportunities I never would have known about otherwise.
  • My favorite thing about being a student at 黑料社 Tri-Cities: One of my favorite things about being a student at 黑料社 Tri-Cities is the sense of community we have. I鈥檝e been able to form strong friendships with my peers while also building connections with professors who have helped me make the most of my education.
  • Favorite hobbies or interests: One of my favorite hobbies is solo camping and hiking! I鈥檝e learned that if there is something you really want to do, sometimes it鈥檚 better to pursue it on your own than miss out on the opportunity because you鈥檙e afraid to do it alone.
  • Favorite study spot or campus activity: On campus, you can find me floating around just about everywhere, but I primarily study in the CIC library or find a sunny spot in the Collab.
  • One piece of advice I have for new students: Branch out and make as many connections as you can. Not only can those connections help you find a community where you feel at home, but they can also open the door to new opportunities and help you grow both personally and academically. Don鈥檛 be afraid to put yourself out there鈥攜ou never know where a new connection might lead!

After I graduate, I hope to do technical work either in a lab, at a field site, or in city planning and implementation.

I became a peer mentor because being a supportive contact for new students is really fun and rewarding! My favorite thing about 黑料社 Tri-Cities is definitely the community 鈥 the students, faculty, and staff make campus a uniquely warm environment. Some things I enjoy outside of school (and sometimes with campus clubs!) include reading, making art, listening to music, cooking and baking, and doing outdoor activities. One piece of advice for new students: make the most of your college experience, whatever that might mean to you! Keep in mind these four years are very special. Go Cougs!

Civil Engineering Junior

I plan to become a licensed professional civil engineer and contribute to projects that improve the safety, resilience, and quality of life in communities.

  • Why I became a Peer Mentor: As a first-generation college and foreign transfer student, I understand how challenging it can be to navigate college while adjusting to a new environment. I became a Peer Mentor because I was in their shoes once, and now I want to help students feel welcomed and supported, that they have someone to rely on as I wish I did, and confident as they work toward their goals and unlock their potential.
  • My favorite thing about being a student at 黑料社 Tri-Cities: I appreciate the close-knit campus community and the great opportunities students have to build meaningful relationships with professors, staff, and one another. 黑料社 Tri-Cities also provides excellent professional networking, giving you the chance to explore different opportunities.
  • A fun fact about me: I really enjoy traveling and cultural exchange. One of the most meaningful experiences I have had was the opportunity to travel to Japan twice through a summer exchange program. I also find it curious how language carries culture and how even small efforts to speak with others meaningfully can build trust and connection. I am currently working on learning a fourth language; I also truly enjoy being someone who helps bring people together. I may seem a little shy, quiet, or even serious at first, but once I feel comfortable, I truly enjoy a nice conversation, making others feel listened to, and helping create a positive and welcoming environment.
  • Favorite hobbies or interests: I enjoy traveling, hiking, fishing, playing, watching movies, listening to music, watching soccer, and spending time with friends and family.
  • Favorite study spot or campus activity: I enjoy studying in a quiet place near a window with sunlight. If available, the upstairs booths in the Collab Building; if not, I’m usually at the CIC TRIO Tables. I like participating in campus events where I can meet other students and become more involved in the university community. I guess I don’t have a single spot in particular.
  • One piece of advice I have for new students: Talk to someone, whether for a question, conversation, or curiosity. Never be afraid to ask questions or seek support. You do not have to navigate college alone, and using the resources and relationships available to you can make an enormous difference. Networking is a huge part of college that I wish someone would’ve told me or helped me with in my first and second year.

I plan to work in the medical field.

  • Why I became a Peer Mentor: I want to make others who are new to 黑料社 Tri-Cities feel welcome and comfortable. When I was a new student, I felt that I missed out on a lot, so I want to ensure new students can experience all this school has to offer.
  • My favorite thing about being a student at 黑料社 Tri-Cities is the community. No matter where you go, there is a place where you belong.
  • A fun fact about me: I could talk endlessly about music.
  • Favorite hobbies or interests: My favorite hobbies include rock climbing, hiking, camping, running, and working out.
  • Favorite study spot or campus activity: I love hanging out in the SUB.
  • One piece of advice I have for new students: Try to break out of your shell and meet new people! It might be difficult at first, but creating those connections will make the process all the more rewarding.

Nursing Senior

After graduation, I plan to pursue my passion for pediatric care and work as a pediatric nurse, where I can make a positive impact in the lives of children and their families.

I became a Peer Mentor because I believe this program provides first-year students with the support and guidance they need when navigating something new. 黑料社 has so many resources, events, and opportunities to offer, but they can easily be overlooked when you don’t know where to look. I want to be a positive figure in students’ first experience at 黑料社 Tri-Cities and help them feel confident, connected, and supported.

My favorite thing about being a student at 黑料社 Tri-Cities is the strong sense of community, support, and diversity. There are so many people from different backgrounds, all working toward their goals while lifting each other up along the way.

Here’s a fun fact about me: I live on a farm, but l’m actually scared of animals!

Some of my favorite hobbies include working out, especially cardio! It’s my way of staying active, clearing my mind, and recharging.

When I need a good study spot, you can usually find me upstairs in the library or in the Collab upstairs in one of the booths. It’s the perfect environment for focus and productivity.

My advice for new students is simple: read your syllabus, advocate for yourself, and remember that it’s okay to not understand something-it’s all part of the learning process. You’re not alone, and there are people and resources here to help you succeed.

I’m excited to meet you, support you, and be a resource as you begin your journey at 黑料社 Tri-Cities!

  • My favorite thing about being a student at 黑料社 Tri-Cities: My favorite thing about being a student at 黑料社 Tri-Cities is being part of such a welcoming community and having the opportunity to meet new people and build meaningful, trustworthy connections.
  • A fun fact about me: I can say 鈥渉ello鈥 in eight different languages!
  • Favorite hobbies or interests: Reading, working out, and redecorating.
  • Favorite study spot or campus activity: My favorite study spots are the collaboration study rooms and the CIC library.
  • One piece of advice I have for new students: One piece of advice I would give to a new student is that it is okay not to know everything or get everything right the first time. We all live, learn, and grow through our experiences, so don鈥檛 be afraid to ask for help when you need it. Asking for help is a strength, and there are always people willing to support you.

  • Why I became a Peer Mentor: I remember my first time on the 黑料社 Tri-Cities campus and how overwhelmed and nervous I felt because I didn鈥檛 know anyone. I worried that I would never make friends or find my place here. I became a Peer Mentor because I want students who may feel the same way to have someone they can turn to, feel comfortable with, and know they鈥檙e not alone. I want to encourage them to step outside their comfort zone, explore new opportunities, and make the most of their college experience.
  • My favorite thing about being a student at 黑料社 Tri-Cities: I love how 黑料社 Tri-Cities feels like a big family where people are always willing to support each other. Being here has pushed me out of my comfort zone, helped me try new things, and allowed me to meet so many amazing people.
  • A fun fact about me: I love traveling!! So I took the challenge, and now I have participated in three study abroad trips through 黑料社.
  • Favorite hobbies or interests: I love reading books and playing video games!
  • Favorite study spot or campus activity: I love the vibe of the SUB when I want to hang out and spend time with friends. When I need to focus and study, I like going to CIC.
  • One piece of advice I have for new students: Don鈥檛 be afraid to step outside your comfort zone, even if you do it one small step at a time. College goes by quickly, so take the opportunity to try new things, meet new people, and make memories along the way. You never know where one small step might lead you!

I plan to get my PhD in Clinical Psychology and become a pediatric clinical psychologist.

I became a peer mentor partially because I had such a great experience with my own peer mentor as an incoming Coug, and also because I鈥檝e loved my time so far at 黑料社 Tri-Cities and want others to enjoy theirs just as much!

One of my favorite things as a 黑料社 Tri-Cities student is the close community and seeing familiar faces everywhere you go. On a larger campus it can be challenging to find your community or even one person that you鈥檝e met before, but our campus is so welcoming and you end up recognizing so many people just from sharing one class.

One fun fact about me is that I was a competitive swimmer for 8 years; because I can modulate my pace in all four strokes, I am actually a part of the top 5% of swimmers in the world! Not making it to the Olympics anytime soon, but I still love to hop in for a good workout. I鈥檓 also an avid reader, and love to cozy up with a warm blanket and any kind of homemade baked treat.

When it comes to school, my favorite place to study for any exam, paper, or even just to knock out some class reading, is anywhere near a window in the Collaboration Hall. It is a perfect place to study by yourself or have a study group!

My best piece of advice for new cougars is put your phone down and embrace the new environment and discomfort. It鈥檚 going to be an awkward time when you鈥檙e getting used to new classes, faculty, and people. Everyone has gone through that at one point or another. If you鈥檙e present and keep an open mind, you鈥檒l find so many opportunities around you.
